Number to Words guide

Spell out numbers in English for checks, invoices, contracts, and school work. Type any number up to the quintillions, with or without decimals, and copy the words, the uppercase version, or the check-writing line.

The method: groups of three

Every number in English is read in groups of three digits. Split the number from the right into groups (1,234,567 becomes 1 | 234 | 567), spell each group as a number from zero to 999, then attach its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion, and so on. Skip any group that is all zeros. That is the entire algorithm, and it is exactly what this converter does.

Spelling a single group is simple too. Hundreds first (two hundred), then the last two digits: 1 to 19 each have their own word, and 20 to 99 combine a tens word with a ones word joined by a hyphen (thirty-four). So 234 is two hundred thirty-four, and 1,234,567 is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven.

Worked examples

2,500,000,000: groups 2 | 500 | 000 | 000. Read as two billion five hundred million. The two zero groups are skipped, which is why you never say zero thousand.

1,001: groups 1 | 001. The second group is 1, so the result is one thousand one. A common mistake is writing one thousand and one; in American formal style, and is reserved for the decimal point.

1,234.56 as a check amount: One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100 Dollars. The dollars are spelled out, the cents become a fraction over 100, and the word and marks where the dollars end. If the amount is whole, write and 00/100, or and no/100, so the line cannot be altered.

Writing checks correctly

A check has two amounts: the numeric box (the courtesy amount) and the written line (the legal amount). If they disagree, the words generally control. Under the Uniform Commercial Code adopted across the US, words prevail over numbers when there is a conflict, which is why banks care so much about that line.

Tips that prevent problems: start writing at the far left of the line, capitalize the words for readability, and draw a line from the end of your text to the word Dollars so nobody can squeeze in extra words. Never leave the written amount blank. For amounts under a dollar, write Only 45/100 Dollars or Zero and 45/100 Dollars.

Even with fewer paper checks in circulation, these rules still matter for rent, security deposits, and small-business payments, and the written line is exactly where check fraud tends to happen.

Style rules: hyphens, and, and capitals

Hyphens: compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated wherever they appear, including forty-two thousand. Scale words are never hyphenated: two hundred, not two-hundred.

And: American usage omits and inside whole numbers (one hundred five), while British and Commonwealth usage includes it (one hundred and five). Both are correct in their own contexts; this tool follows American style because checks and US style guides expect it.

Numerals vs. words in prose: The Chicago Manual of Style spells out whole numbers from zero to one hundred, while AP style spells out only one through nine. Both use numerals for large figures, except at the start of a sentence, where the number is spelled out or the sentence is rewritten.

Large number names

Each new scale word is 1,000 times the previous one in the short scale used in the US and modern British English: thousand (10^3), million (10^6), billion (10^9), trillion (10^12), quadrillion (10^15), quintillion (10^18). Some European languages use the long scale, where a billion means a million million. That difference is a classic source of translation errors in financial documents.

The US federal debt passed $30 trillion in 2022. In words, $30,000,000,000,000 is thirty trillion dollars; the tool handles figures up to 21 digits exactly, because it works with the digit string instead of a floating-point number that would round off the last digits.

Common mistakes

Writing forty as fourty, ninety as ninty, or eighteen as eightteen, the three most frequent spelling errors. Adding and in whole numbers on formal US documents. Reading decimals as whole numbers: 3.14 is three point one four, not three point fourteen. And mismatching the numeric and written amounts on a check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write 1,234.56 in words?

One thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six. On a check, write One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100 Dollars, with cents as a fraction over 100.

How do you write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words, then and, then the cents as a fraction over 100, then Dollars: Two Hundred Fifty and 00/100 Dollars. Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any leftover space so nothing can be added.

Should I use and in numbers like one hundred and five?

In American English, formal style leaves out and inside whole numbers (one hundred five) and saves it for the decimal point or cents, which is why checks read and 56/100. British English usually includes it: one hundred and five.

Where do hyphens go in written numbers?

Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, including inside larger numbers: three hundred forty-two. Do not hyphenate hundred, thousand, or million.

How are decimals written in words?

In everyday speech and in this tool, digit by digit after point: 3.14 is three point one four. In money, use cents; in formal math or legal writing, fractions like three and fourteen hundredths are also used.

How big a number can it convert?

Up to 21 digits, which reaches the quintillions. It works on the digits as text, so even very large numbers are exact, with no rounding errors.

Is my data uploaded?

How do you write 100,000 in words?

One hundred thousand. For 150,000, write one hundred fifty thousand, and for 1,500,000, one million five hundred thousand.

Is it forty or fourty?

Forty. Four drops its u in forty, although fourteen and four hundred keep it.
