Steps to Miles Calculator guide
Turn your step count into distance. The calculator estimates step length from height (or uses your measured step length) and shows how many steps make a mile for you.
How steps become miles
Distance is steps multiplied by step length. There are 63,360 inches in a mile, so miles = steps × step length in inches ÷ 63,360. Every step counter on the market uses some version of this. The only real question is where the step length comes from.
If you do not know your step length, the calculator estimates it from height: height × 0.415 for men and height × 0.413 for women. This is the standard pedometer rule of thumb for walking, and it is what most fitness trackers use before they have GPS data to calibrate against. It holds up well for an average walking pace on flat ground. It is less accurate for very tall or very short people, for fast walking, and it does not apply to running, where steps are much longer.
One naming trap: trackers call this "stride length", but technically it is step length, the distance from one heel strike to the next heel strike of the other foot. A true stride (left foot to left foot) is two steps. If you measured a full stride, halve it before entering it.
Worked example
A man who is 5'9" (69 inches) walks 10,000 steps. Step length = 69 × 0.415 = 28.6 inches. Distance = 10,000 × 28.6 ÷ 63,360 = 4.52 miles (7.27 km). His steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ 28.6 ≈ 2,213.
A woman who is 5'4" (64 inches) walks 8,000 steps. Step length = 64 × 0.413 = 26.4 inches. Distance = 8,000 × 26.4 ÷ 63,360 = 3.34 miles. She needs about 2,397 steps for each mile.
The famous "2,000 steps per mile" figure only fits someone about 6'4"; at 6 feet it is about 2,120 and at 5'4" about 2,400. Shorter walkers take more steps per mile, which is why a 10,000-step day means a different distance for everyone.
Measure your own step length in 2 minutes
For the most accurate number, measure. Mark a known distance: a 400 m running track (inside lane), a football field (100 yards = 3,600 inches), or 50 feet measured with a tape. Walk it at your normal pace, counting steps. Divide the distance in inches by the number of steps. Repeat twice and average.
Example: 100 yards (3,600 in) in 120 steps = 30 inches per step. Enter 30 in the optional step length field and 10,000 steps becomes 4.73 miles, about 2,112 steps per mile. Measuring beats any height formula, and it is how you should calibrate a pedometer or watch.
Common mistakes
Using height in feet. The formula needs total inches: 5'9" is 69 inches, not 5.9.
Mixing running and walking steps. Running steps can be 30-50% longer. If a day included a run, the walking-based estimate will undercount distance.
Entering a full stride as step length. Halve it.
Expecting tracker and calculator to match exactly. Wrist trackers can miss steps when you push a stroller or cart, and add phantom steps on bumpy car rides. Treat both as estimates within about 10%.
Ignoring terrain. Hills, stairs, sand, and crowded sidewalks shorten steps, so the same step count covers less ground.
Is 10,000 steps a day the right goal?
The 10,000 figure started as a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing slogan, not a medical guideline. Research since then is still encouraging. A meta-analysis of 15 cohorts (Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health 2022) found the drop in mortality risk levels off at about 8,000-10,000 steps a day for adults under 60 and 6,000-8,000 for adults 60 and older. More is not bad, but the jump from 3,000 to 7,000 matters far more than 10,000 to 14,000.
For weight goals, distance and pace matter more than the step count itself. Use the steps to calories calculator to turn today's steps into an energy estimate, and the pace calculator if you want to convert distance into walking speed.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
About 2,000-2,400 for most adults walking. A 5'9" man averages about 2,200 steps per mile; a 5'4" woman about 2,400. Taller people take fewer, longer steps.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
Roughly 4-5 miles. For a 5'9" man it is about 4.5 miles; for a 5'4" woman about 4.2 miles.
How is step length estimated from height?
A common pedometer rule is height x 0.415 for men and height x 0.413 for women. At 69 inches that gives a step length of about 28.6 inches.
How do I measure my step length?
Walk a known distance, such as 100 yards on a football field, at your normal pace and count your steps. Divide the distance in inches by the step count. Enter the result in the step length field.
Is stride length the same as step length?
Not technically. A step is heel to heel of opposite feet; a stride is two steps. Most fitness trackers say stride but mean step length, which is what this calculator uses.
Does this work for running?
No. Running steps are much longer than walking steps, so a walking estimate undercounts running distance. Measure your running step length or use GPS.
Is my data uploaded?
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded to a server or stored by us.
How many miles is 5,000 steps?
About 2.1-2.4 miles for most adults. A 5'9" man covers roughly 2.26 miles; a 5'4" woman roughly 2.09 miles.
How many steps are in a kilometer?
Roughly 1,300-1,500 for most adults walking. The table in the calculator shows steps per km for each height.
