Three kinds of small text

Unicode doesn't have a font size. Tiny text on Instagram or Discord is built from three different sets of characters that are drawn small: superscript letters that sit high on the line (ᵗⁱⁿʸ), subscript letters that sit low (ₜᵢₙᵧ, where possible), and small capitals that are capital-shaped but lowercase-sized (ᴛɪɴʏ). This generator shows all three so you can pick the one that looks best on your device.

Each set came into Unicode for a different reason. Superscripts and subscripts are for footnotes, chemistry and math (H₂O, x²). Most superscript letters are phonetic modifier letters used by linguists. Small capitals come from the IPA and Uralic phonetic alphabets. Because none of them were designed as a complete alphabet, every set has gaps.

The gaps, honestly

Superscript has every lowercase letter except q. The tool uses ᑫ, a Canadian Syllabics character that looks close, and most generators do the same. Uppercase superscripts are patchy: C, F, Q, S, X, Y and Z don't exist, so those fall back to the lowercase superscript version. Digits 0-9 and the signs + - = ( ) all have superscripts.

Subscript is the weakest. Unicode only has subscript a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x. The letters b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z simply don't exist as subscripts, so they stay normal size here rather than being faked with look-alikes that break on other phones. Subscript digits and math signs are complete, which is why it works perfectly for chemical formulas like CO₂ and C₆H₁₂O₆.

Small caps covers every letter except x, which has no small capital. The q uses ǫ, a common stand-in. Small caps render well almost everywhere because they come from the IPA block that system fonts include.

Where small text works

Instagram bios and captions, TikTok bios and comments, Discord messages and nicknames, X posts, WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat and YouTube comments all accept it. It won't work in usernames or handles, which only allow basic letters, numbers and a few symbols.

Popular uses: a tiny subtitle under your name in a bio, a whispered aside in a caption (like ᵗʰⁱˢ), footnote-style jokes, and Discord nicknames that look quieter than everyone else's. Superscript numbers are handy for real footnotes and exponents in plain-text places like email or chat: 10³, 2ⁿ, m².

Why it looks uneven

Superscript letters come from several Unicode blocks added at different times, so fonts draw them at slightly different sizes and heights. On iPhone they look fairly even; on some Android and Windows fonts, letters like ᶜ, ᶠ and ᶻ can look bigger or sit lower than their neighbors. Small caps are the most consistent option if evenness matters.

If a character shows as an empty box, the viewer's font doesn't include it. Superscript ᑫ and a few newer modifier letters are the usual suspects.

Accessibility

Screen readers handle small text poorly. A superscript word may be read as “modifier letter small t, modifier letter small i…” or skipped. Search features inside apps also won't match tiny letters to regular words. Use small text for decoration, not for your name, links or anything a person needs to read. For real footnotes and formulas on a website, use the HTML sup and sub tags instead, which screen readers understand.

Quick recipes

Bio subtitle: type your role (for example “designer · nyc”) and copy the small caps result under your name. Whisper effect: add a superscript word after a sentence in a caption, like “okay fine ᵐᵃʸᵇᵉ”. Math in chat: type x^2 as x² by copying just the superscript 2. Chemistry homework in a text message: copy the subscript version of H2SO4 to get H₂SO₄. Discord role flair: small caps nicknames stand out without breaking mentions, since your @username stays the same.
