How upside-down text works
There is no “rotate” switch in Unicode. Upside-down text is a trick: each letter is swapped for a different character that happens to look like it turned 180 degrees, and then the order is reversed so the whole line reads correctly when you flip your phone. “hello” becomes “ollǝɥ”.
The replacements come from all over Unicode. Some are IPA phonetic letters (ɐ, ǝ, ɥ, ɯ, ɹ, ʇ, ʌ, ʍ, ʎ), some are letters that are already mirror pairs (b and q, d and p, n and u), some are math symbols (∀ for A, ⊥ for T, ∩ for U), and a few come from the Lisu script (ꓭ, ꓷ, ꓘ, ꓤ). Numbers borrow from Greek and CJK look-alikes, which is why 4 and 7 look a bit rough.
The five versions, and when to use each
Upside down is the classic: flipped and reversed, so it reads right if you rotate the screen. Use this one for pranks and bios.
Upside down, same order keeps the letters in their original order. It looks upside down on screen, but if someone rotates their phone the words run backwards. It's handy when you want the flipped look without the reversal, for example in a username-style tag.
Backwards (mirrored) reverses the text and swaps letters for mirror-image look-alikes, like writing on a window from the inside. Reversed only reverses the letter order and changes nothing else, which is useful for palindrome checks and simple puzzles. Upside down, word order kept flips each word in place, so short phrases stay in sequence.
Where it works
Copy and paste works in Instagram and TikTok bios and captions, X posts, Discord, WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook, YouTube comments, Reddit and most messaging apps. It doesn't work in usernames or handles, which only accept basic letters and numbers.
Capital letters are the weak spot. Several flipped capitals come from newer or rarer Unicode blocks, and older Android versions or some Windows fonts show them as empty boxes. If a word looks broken on a friend's phone, retype it in lowercase. Lowercase flipped letters have near-universal support because they come from the IPA block that every system font includes.
Fun uses that actually land
Put a flipped line at the end of a caption as an Easter egg: “ɹǝʌǝ ǝɔuǝʇuǝs ʇsǝʇɐǝɹƃ ǝɥʇ” makes people rotate their phones, and that extra second of attention helps. Teachers use it for quick reading puzzles. Australians use it for, well, obvious reasons. Birthday messages that read “upside down” are a classic too.
Mirrored text is the go-to for spooky or Stranger Things-style posts, and for testing whether someone can read backwards (surprisingly hard past a few words).
Accessibility and search
Screen readers read these characters by their real names, so “ʇsǝʇ” comes out as a string of phonetic symbol names, or gets skipped. Search engines and in-app search won't match flipped text to the real words either. Keep anything important in normal text and use flipped text as a joke, not a message someone has to understand.
It's also a poor choice for anything official: moderation filters sometimes flag unusual characters as spam, and some sites strip them when you save.
A quick history of flipped text
Upside-down text took off on MySpace and early Facebook around 2008, when people discovered that IPA phonetic letters could fake a rotated alphabet. The trick hasn't changed since, but Unicode has grown. Newer blocks like Lisu added convincing flipped capitals such as ꓭ and ꓷ, which is why modern results look cleaner than the old ones, at the cost of empty boxes on some older phones. Lowercase output still leans on the IPA letters that every device has supported for well over a decade.
