Remove pages without Acrobat Pro

Deleting a page from a PDF should be trivial, but the free Adobe Reader won't do it, Preview is Mac-only, and the upload sites want your file on their server plus a daily limit. Meanwhile the jobs are small and constant: a blank page from a double-sided scan, the cover sheet on a fax, the ad pages in a downloaded statement, the one page of a bank export you'd rather not send your landlord.

This tool deletes pages in your browser. The PDF isn't uploaded anywhere, which matters most exactly when you're removing pages: you usually delete a page because it has something on it you don't want to share.

How to delete pages from a PDF

Choose a PDF. Every page shows up as a numbered button. Tap the pages you want gone; they turn red and get struck through. Or type them in the box: 2 deletes page 2, 5-7 deletes pages 5 through 7, 12- deletes page 12 to the end, and you can combine them with commas. Typing and tapping stay in sync, so you can type a range and then tap a couple of extras. Press Delete pages, then Download PDF.

Invert selection flips everything, which is the fast way to keep only a few pages out of a long file: tap the 3 pages you want to keep, press Invert, and delete the rest. The tool won't let you delete every page, since a PDF needs at least one.

Finding the right page numbers

The page buttons show numbers, not previews. That keeps the page fast and works on any phone, but it means you need to know which pages to remove. Open the PDF in your usual viewer (a browser tab works) and note the page numbers from its page counter. Use the counter, not the numbers printed on the pages themselves: a document whose printed numbering starts after a cover and contents page will be off by two.

For scans with blank backs, the pattern is usually every even page, so type even and check the count matches. Typing odd works the same way. If only some backs are blank, tap them individually.

Why the file gets smaller (and some tools' don't)

Some PDF editors delete a page by just unlinking it from the page list. The page's images and fonts stay buried in the file, so a 20 MB scan with half its pages deleted is still 20 MB, and the "deleted" content can still be recovered by anyone with the right tool. That's a genuine privacy problem if you removed a page because it had your account numbers on it.

This tool builds a fresh PDF from only the pages you keep, using pdf-lib. Images and fonts used only by deleted pages aren't copied, so they're really gone and the file shrinks accordingly. The kept pages are copied exactly: text stays selectable, images keep full resolution, and links on those pages still work.

One trade-off to know about: document-level extras like bookmarks, attachments and fillable form fields may not carry into the new file. If the PDF is a form you've filled in, flatten or print it to PDF first, then delete pages.

What deleting a page does not do

Deleting a page doesn't redact the pages you keep. If page 3 has a Social Security number in the corner and you still need page 3, deleting other pages won't help, and drawing a black box over it in a PDF editor often leaves the text underneath selectable. For real redaction on a kept page, print that page to paper, black it out with a marker, and rescan, or use a dedicated redaction feature that removes the underlying text.

It also doesn't touch the original file on your device. You get a new download named with -edited on the end, so if you delete the wrong page, just start over from the original.

The rest of the cleanup kit

Deleting is usually one step of tidying a scan. Fix sideways pages with rotate PDF, put pages back in sequence with reorder PDF pages, or extract a set of pages into their own file with split PDF (the opposite way of thinking about the same job: pick what to keep instead of what to remove). Combine the cleaned-up result with other documents using merge PDF, and add page numbers last so they're continuous.
