Rotate once, and it stays rotated

Every PDF viewer has a rotate button, and it's useless for this job. Rotating in Chrome, Edge, Preview or Acrobat Reader only changes how the page is shown on your screen right now. Close the file, email it, or open it on another computer, and the scanned page is sideways again. To fix it for everyone, the rotation has to be saved into the file itself.

That's what this tool does. It sets each page's rotation in the PDF (the /Rotate entry defined in the PDF specification), so every viewer on every device shows the page the way you set it. Your PDF never leaves your device; pdf-lib does the work in your browser.

How to rotate PDF pages

Choose a PDF. Every page appears as a small tile shaped like the page, turned to its current orientation, with its rotation shown underneath. To rotate everything, leave Pages set to all and press Left 90, Right 90 or 180. To rotate just some pages, type them in the Pages box (3, 5-7, or 8- for page 8 to the end) and press a button, or use the arrows on an individual tile. Changed pages get a teal border. Press Save rotated PDF, then Download.

Two shortcuts save real time. Typing even or odd rotates every other page, which fixes duplex scans where every back side came out upside down (select even, press 180). Turn landscape pages to portrait finds every sideways page in your range and turns it upright in one click, which is handy for a 40-page scan where a few pages went in the feeder the wrong way.

Lossless, instant, and the file size doesn't change

Because only the page's rotation setting changes, nothing inside the page is touched. Text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their full resolution, links and form fields still work, and the file size stays essentially the same. Tools that rotate by rasterizing (turning each page into an image and back) make the file bigger and blurrier; this doesn't.

It's also fast. A 500-page PDF rotates in about a second, since there's no rendering involved. The practical limit is your device's memory, not a page cap.

Why pages come out sideways in the first place

The usual culprit is a scanner or phone scan app. Put a landscape document in a portrait feeder and the scanner saves it sideways. Phone scanning apps guess orientation from the camera and sometimes guess wrong. Wide spreadsheets printed to PDF often end up as landscape content on a portrait page. And a page that's already carrying a rotation can be rotated again by a second app, ending up at 180 degrees.

Each tile shows the page's current saved rotation, so you can see which pages already had a rotation applied before you touched them. If you change your mind, Undo all changes restores the rotations the file came with.

Common questions about rotating PDFs

Can you rotate a page by 45 degrees? Not with this method. The PDF format only allows page rotation in steps of 90 degrees. Straightening a crooked scan by a couple of degrees means re-rendering the page as an image, which loses text selectability.

Why doesn't the tile show the page content? Showing page previews needs a separate PDF rendering library that roughly triples this page's size. The tile shape and rotation number tell you the orientation; if you're unsure which pages are sideways, open the PDF in any viewer, note the page numbers, and type them here. After saving, open the result to confirm.

Password-protected PDFs can't be edited until the protection is removed. Open the file with its password and use Print, Save as PDF to make an unlocked copy, then rotate that.
